Taking the Photo at Home
You don't need expensive photography equipment. A modern smartphone or digital camera is more than sufficient if you follow these simple photography rules:
Stand in front of a plain white or light off-white wall. Avoid patterned wallpaper, door frames, or shadows behind you.
Face a window with soft natural light, or use two symmetric light sources to prevent shadows on your face or under your chin.
Keep the camera level with your eyes, roughly 1.5 to 2 meters (5–7 feet) away. Have a friend take the shot to avoid selfie distortion.
Look directly into the camera lens with both eyes open, mouth closed, and a relaxed, natural facial expression (no wide smile or frown).
Wear everyday clothes that contrast with the white background (no white shirts or uniforms). Remove eyeglasses to prevent reflections.
Include your full head, neck, and upper shoulders with ample margin above your hair so the crop tool can position correctly.

Cropping and Aligning to Biometric Standards
Our online crop tool automatically detects facial landmarks using in-browser computer vision. You can also fine-tune the crop frame:
- Head Contour Alignment: Adjust the top edge of the crop guide to touch the crown of the head (including hair).
- Chin Line Alignment: Align the bottom guide with the tip of the chin.
- Eye Level: Ensure your eyes fall within the designated horizontal biometric guideline zone.
- Move & Resize: Drag the crop frame corners to scale up or down proportionally while preserving the official aspect ratio.
Downloading and Printing for Pennies
Once cropped, click Download. You receive both a single high-resolution digital image and a standard 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) printable sheet containing multiple photos.
Important Printing Tips (Avoid Costly Rejection!)
If you order "passport photos" at pharmacy counters (CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid), they charge $15–$20. Instead, order our 4x6" template as a standard glossy photo print, which costs just $0.25 to $0.40!
When printing at a local kiosk or home printer, ensure the software is set to "100%" or "Actual Size". Do NOT select "Fit to Frame" or "Scale to Page", as that will alter the physical millimetre dimensions.
Use high-quality glossy or semi-gloss / matte photographic paper. Plain copy paper or cardstock will be rejected by official passport agencies.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Shadows cast on the wall or face obscure facial features and violate ICAO biometric standards.
Most countries (including the US) now strictly prohibit glasses in passport photos due to glare.
Holding the phone in your hand creates wide-angle facial distortion. Use a tripod or a friend.
Keep a neutral expression with lips closed so automated border control e-gates can match landmarks.
